MANHATTAN SPECIAL
The Coffee Soda That Bottled the Spirit of New York
There are certain products that virtually no one outside of New York City has ever heard of. They are beloved by the “locals,” so to speak. They are part of New York’s DNA. And while they may not dominate national advertising campaigns, or may never be the trendiest item on social media, they endure because they represent something authentic. For me, Manhattan Special Coffee Soda is one of those products.
As a native New Yorker and someone who spends a significant amount of time exploring food, beverages, and culinary culture, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for brands that stay true to their roots. Manhattan Special isn’t just another soda. It’s a living piece of New York history that has managed to remain relevant while staying remarkably unchanged.
Of course I am a little biased. My Nana, Joan Lofaso, introduced me to Manhattan Special Espresso Coffee Soda some 45 years ago. The memories I have around this incredible drink are priceless.
Founded in Brooklyn in 1895, Manhattan Special has been producing its signature Espresso Coffee Soda for more than 130 years. Think about that for a moment. This is a beverage that has survived changing tastes, economic downturns, two World Wars, and the rise of countless beverage giants. Yet somehow, this Brooklyn-born icon continues to thrive.
What makes Manhattan Special so special isn’t just its longevity. It’s the fact that it has never tried to be anything other than what it is.
Today’s beverage market is filled with products chasing the latest trend. Every year brings a new category, a new ingredient, or a new promise. Meanwhile, Manhattan Special continues doing what it has always done—crafting a distinctive coffee soda made with real espresso and a recipe that has earned generations of loyal fans.
The first time you crack open a bottle, you’re greeted with an aroma that’s unmistakably coffee. Not coffee-flavored. Coffee. The carbonation adds a refreshing quality while allowing the rich roasted espresso notes to shine through. It’s sweet without being overwhelming, bold without being harsh, and unlike anything else currently on the market.
What I love most is that Manhattan Special doesn’t compromise its identity to appeal to a broader audience. It remains proudly coffee-forward. It’s a beverage that knows exactly what it is and isn’t afraid to celebrate it.
In many ways, that confidence mirrors New York itself.
Growing up in New York, I learned that authenticity matters. The city rewards originality. The restaurants, bakeries, pizzerias, and food producers that stand the test of time are usually the ones that refuse to cut corners or chase every passing fad. Manhattan Special belongs in that category.
It also represents something larger than a beverage.
Every bottle tells a story about Brooklyn’s rich immigrant heritage, family-owned businesses, and the entrepreneurial spirit that helped build New York into one of the world’s great food capitals. Long before “craft” became a marketing buzzword, companies like Manhattan Special were quietly perfecting their products and building loyal followings through quality and consistency.
That’s something worth celebrating.
As I explored the history of the company, I found myself thinking about how rare it is to find brands that remain genuinely connected to their origins. Brooklyn has changed dramatically over the last century. Entire neighborhoods have transformed. Industries have evolved. Yet Manhattan Special continues to serve as a reminder of the city’s manufacturing and culinary heritage.
Perhaps that’s why the brand inspires such loyalty.
For many New Yorkers, Manhattan Special isn’t simply a drink. It’s a memory. It’s the bottle your grandparents introduced you to. It’s the beverage sitting in the cooler at your favorite neighborhood pizzeria. It’s a familiar taste that instantly transports you back to a different time and place.
Those emotional connections cannot be manufactured.
At Great Bites, we’re always excited to spotlight innovative products and emerging food trends. But every so often, it’s important to recognize the classics that helped pave the way. Manhattan Special has earned its place among New York’s great culinary icons because it has never lost sight of what made it special in the first place.
In a world that constantly pushes businesses to reinvent themselves, Manhattan Special offers a different lesson.
Sometimes the smartest thing you can do is stay true to who you are.
More than 130 years after its founding, Manhattan Special continues to embody everything I love about New York: tradition, resilience, authenticity, and craftsmanship. And in my opinion, that’s what makes this iconic coffee soda one of the greatest beverages ever produced in the Empire State.
Sometimes a bottle contains more than a drink.
Sometimes it contains a story. And Manhattan Special’s story is pure New York.
